About the museum
The museum in Szreniawa was established by an order of the Minister of Agriculture in 1964 and opened to visitors on 29 August 1964. Its seat became a former landed estate with a manor house built in 1852–1853 for the Bierbaum family to a design by the Berlin architect Carl Heinrich Eduard Knoblauch, together with a farmstead and a park. On a nearby hill, around 1880, the Bierbaums erected a neo-Gothic mausoleum combined with a lookout tower. In 1920 the estate was bought by Józef Glabisz, and after the Second World War it was nationalised.
In 1975 the institution received the status of a national museum, and since 1986 it has borne its present name. Since 1999 it has been a self-governing cultural institution, whose founder is the self-government of the Greater Poland Voivodeship. The museum also runs branches: the Museum of Nature and Hunting in Uzarzewo, the Museum of Milling in Jaraczewo, the Museum of Basketry and Hop Growing in Nowy Tomyśl, the Museum of Meat Production in Sielinko and the Museum of Beekeeping in Swarzędz.
In 2008–2011 the manor house and the park were restored, and the buildings of the 19th-century farmstead were adapted to the museum’s needs. Visitors can now see exhibitions on the history of agriculture, village crafts, food processing, plant and animal breeding, and farm technology. The museum relies on “living” presentations: demonstrations, the starting up of historic machines, and the breeding of conservation-breed animals on the farmstead.
