About the museum
The Muzeum Przyrodnicze Wielkopolskiego Parku Narodowego (Nature Museum of the Greater Poland National Park) in Jeziory opened in May 1998 as the continuation of the museum in Puszczykowo, which had operated since 4 August 1952. The founders of the former institution were Antoni Wiśniewski, Gustaw Spława-Neyman and Józef Kostyrko, and its first collection had 530 specimens. Over the 46 years of the museum in Puszczykowo, about 800,000 people visited it.
The museum is housed in the building of the national park’s headquarters in Jeziory. During the German occupation it was the home of Arthur Greiser, Reich Governor of the Warthegau (Kraj Warty); after the war it was a sanatorium for children with lung diseases.
The permanent exhibition occupies four halls on the ground floor. It tells of the creation of the park, its geology, ecosystems and Ice Age animals, and of its lakes, with aquariums of fish, a forest-and-water diorama, birds and insects, including a butterfly collection. Temporary exhibitions are shown in the lobby of the headquarters.
