About the museum

The Muzeum Regionalne w Stęszewie was established in 1970 as the Izba Muzealna (Museum Room), to mark the 600th anniversary of the town receiving its municipal rights. It opened on 20 September 1970 in the arcaded house at Rynek 8, the only one preserved in the town and the oldest in its buildings, erected in the second half of the 18th century. The building was saved from demolition in 1968, and the arcades were reconstructed during the renovation.

The collections come almost entirely from donations by residents of Stęszew and the surrounding area. In 1980 the room was renamed the Muzeum Regionalne and entered in the Register of Museums; after a second building was added at ul. Kuśnierska, the institution gained additional rooms.

The ethnographic exhibition shows everyday objects, dowry chests, tools and craft machines, and Greater Poland musical instruments. The history hall presents memorabilia of the shooting guild (bractwo strzeleckie), the craft guilds and former Stęszew organisations, and a separate corner is devoted to the Greater Poland Uprising and the Second World War.
