About the museum

The Muzeum-Pracownia Literacka Arkadego Fiedlera opened on 1 January 1974 in the old family home of the Fiedler family in Puszczykowo, near Poznań. The writer and traveller, born in Poznań in 1894, bought the villa, built in 1926, in 1946 after returning from wartime emigration, and two years later brought his wife Maria and their two sons here from London. Growing interest from readers in the house where Fiedler lived and worked, and in the souvenirs from his travels kept there, gave the family the idea of setting up a museum in the villa. The conversion of the building lasted throughout 1973.

In 1991 the Town Council of Puszczykowo withdrew the museum’s grants, and since then it has been funded solely from its own resources, with the Fiedler family receiving the visitors. Until the end of 2000 it was visited by more than a million people from Poland and abroad. Over the years the collections and the garden were expanded: in 2002 a Piramida (Pyramid), a copy of the Pyramid of Cheops at a scale of 1:23, was erected in the park, and in 2003 the exhibition “Tajemniczy świat Indian” (The Mysterious World of the Indians), devoted to pre-Columbian cultures, was opened.

In the garden, known as the Ogród Kultur i Tolerancji (Garden of Cultures and Tolerance), stands a replica of the sailing ship Santa Maria at a scale of 1:1, launched on 12 May 2008 after four years of construction. The museum runs museum lessons and meetings with members of the Fiedler family, and lends travelling exhibitions, including on the 303 Squadron (Dywizjon 303) and on the journey to Madagascar.
