About the museum
The Fire Museum in Kotuń was established as a social institution by resolution of the board of the local Volunteer Fire Brigade (OSP) of 26 August 1982. Provincial institutions and fire brigade associations joined the organisational work. The permanent exhibition was opened to visitors on 25 November 1983, and later that same year the museum was transformed into a branch of the District Museum in Siedlce.
The museum is housed in the fire station (remiza OSP), whose exhibition area was enlarged during extensions in 1984–1985 and 1987–1988. The collections come mainly from donations by firefighters and units from the former Siedlce voivodeship and from across the country. The museum now holds more than one thousand three hundred items, including several hundred technical and several hundred artistic and historical objects.
The exhibition shows the development of firefighting technology from the middle of the 19th century to the end of the 20th century. It includes the largest collection of hand-operated portable fire pumps in Poland, motor pumps, firefighting and alarm equipment, historic horse-drawn carts and fire engines, as well as banners, diplomas, decorations and photographs. The museum library holds firefighting books and periodicals, including yearbooks of “Strażak” (The Firefighter).
