About the museum
The first museum in Siedlce, the Podlasie Land Museum (Muzeum Ziemi Podlaskiej), was founded in 1909 by the local branch of the Polish Society of Tourism and Sightseeing (Polskie Towarzystwo Krajoznawcze). Its work was interrupted by the First World War. In 1928 the town council resolved to establish the Mieczysław Asłanowicz Podlasie Land Museum (Muzeum Ziemi Podlaskiej im. Mieczysława Asłanowicza) with its seat in the town hall tower; its collections covered archaeology, history, ethnography and art.
After the town hall was destroyed in July 1944, the building was rebuilt in the 1950s and the museum was reactivated. It began operating on 1 January 1967. Until 1975 it was called the Podlasie Land Museum, then it was a District Museum, and since 2000 it has operated as the Regional Museum.
The seat is the town hall built in 1763–1773 on the initiative of the Czartoryski princes and topped with a figure of Atlas, which the residents call “Jacek”. The permanent exhibition includes a gallery of Polish art, an archaeological exhibition on the prehistory of the Podlasie and Masovia borderland, the history of Siedlce up to 1939, and the interior of a village house. The museum also has branches in Dąbrowa, Kotuń and Nowe Iganie.
