About the museum
The museum is housed in Primary School No. 11, named after John Paul II, in Siedlce, and opened on 17 May 1997, the day the school was given the name of its patron. The opening was performed by Bishop Jan Mazur and the mayor of the city, Henryk Gut. The organiser and volunteer curator was Adam Klejc.
Valuable memorabilia were obtained directly from the Vatican, thanks to cooperation with the Pope’s personal secretary and with nuns in Rome. The collections include items of John Paul II’s clothing, among them the piuska (zucchetto), slippers, a belt and a mitre, personal objects such as a watch and a fountain pen, and memorabilia of the papal pilgrimages, for example an ebony clock from the President of Malawi and a hammock from the President of Colombia.
The most valuable exhibit is the Pope’s white cassock. Also notable are the collection of medals and coins, a collection of postage stamps and commemorative envelopes from many countries, and paintings, including a portrait of the Holy Father, signed by him, painted in 1996 by an Italian painter. The room is visited by pupils, residents of the region and guests from Poland and abroad.
