About the museum
The Muzeum Przyrodnicze Wolińskiego Parku Narodowego (Natural History Museum of the Wolin National Park) opened in 1962. Initially it was housed in a neighbouring villa from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, which is a listed building. The present modern pavilion was opened in 1995, and a year later the building received a national award as building of the year. The museum stands in the centre of Międzyzdroje, on Wzgórze Filaretów (Filaret Hill), in a garden of about 1.5 hectares.
In five rooms with a total area of about 900 square metres, the nature of the national park is presented in the form of dioramas. Visitors see, among other things, the shore of the Szczecin Lagoon, the seacliffs in winter and summer, waterbirds and birds of prey with a white-tailed eagle nest, and grey seals. The exhibitions of non-forest and aquatic ecosystems are particularly valuable; they cover around 60 percent of the park’s area. The forest ecosystems are represented by red deer, roe deer, wild boar, fox and bison; the bison specimens come from the park’s breeding programme. Separate exhibitions are devoted to geology, including Baltic amber, and to ethnography.
The museum can be toured with a free audio guide. The Centrum Edukacyjno-Muzealne (Educational and Museum Centre) has conference and education rooms, where nature films are shown in summer. Souvenirs, publications, maps and guides are available for purchase.
