About the museum
The first exhibition on the early medieval history of Wolin was organised in the 1930s by German researchers, in one of the rooms of a school at today's ul. Zamkowa, where the management of the excavations carried out from 1934 onwards had its office. The first postwar exhibition opened in 1952 at the Archaeological Station at ul. Zamkowa 16 and presented the results of archaeological research after 1945.
The Regional Museum in Wolin opened on 22 July 1966. Its first display covered the history of Wolin from the 9th to the 12th century; its script was prepared by archaeologists from the Archaeological Workshop of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) in Wolin. In the first months about four thousand people visited it. From 1968 to 1992 the museum was headed by the archaeologist Andrzej Kaube, thanks to whom the number of visitors rose in 1988 to 42 thousand; on 28 May 1993 the institution received his name.
Today the museum holds archaeological, historical and ethnographic collections on the history of Wolin and the surrounding area, as well as a unique collection of photographs showing life in West Pomerania after 1945. A library is also available. Finds from the excavations, such as an antler pin, a figurine made of yew or maple, and a gilded bronze figurine of a horse, show the culture of the former Wolin stronghold.
