About the museum
The open-air museum in Wolin was established on the initiative of the association Centrum Słowian i Wikingów “Wolin-Jomsborg-Vineta” and opened on 7 April 2008. It lies on the island of Wolińska Kępa above the river Dziwna, within the administrative boundaries of the town of Wolin, in a place linked to the legend of the early medieval town of Jomsborg-Vineta.
Initially, 13 objects recalling the buildings of old Wolin stood in the open-air museum; they were surrounded by defensive ramparts and a fragment of palisade with a gate and a small tower. Further huts and buildings were reconstructed over time. Twice – in 2011 and 2014 – fires destroyed part of the buildings.
Visitors can enter the huts, touch objects, try on costumes and armour and shoot with a bow. Staff and participants in events in historical costume demonstrate old crafts and fighting. The Festival of Slavs and Vikings takes place here every year, and films for television and documentary channels have also been shot at the open-air museum.
