About the museum
The museum was founded on the initiative of the branch of the Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society (Polskie Towarzystwo Turystyczno-Krajoznawcze), set up in Muszyna in 1956, whose members decided to collect memorabilia and relics of the region’s folk art. The initiator of the project was Karol Rojna. After two years of collecting exhibits and funds, and of renovating the historic coaching inn at ul. Kity 16, the “Muzeum Pamiątek Muszyny” (Museum of Muszyna Memorabilia) was solemnly opened on 3 August 1958.
In the following decades the collection grew: in 1972 it numbered 572 exhibits and had a professionally prepared historical exhibition. Because of the poor technical condition of the building and a planned bypass, in 2009 the town decided to rebuild the coaching inn next to the Starosta’s Manor (Dwór Starostów). The reconstruction, mostly co-financed from European Union funds, was completed on 30 July 2010. Since 2010 the museum has operated within the Municipal and Gmina Centre of Culture, today the Centre for Culture and Reading in Muszyna, and the whole complex is called the Park of Culture and Old Crafts (Park Kultury i Dawnego Rzemiosła).
The exhibition tells the story of the so-called Muszyna Lordship (Państwo Muszyńskie), the estates of the Kraków bishopric with Muszyna and Tylicz, and of the starosts, burghers, Lemkos and Jews living in the region. The collections also include burgher chests, militaria and Judaica, and a separate room is devoted to non-professional art, including works by Nikifor.
