About the museum

The Muzeum Nikifora, a branch of the Regional Museum in Nowy Sącz, is housed in the wooden villa “Romanówka”, typical of 19th-century spa towns. The building stood until 1990 at ul. Piłsudskiego; it was dismantled, and after a conservation renovation in 1992–1994 it was rebuilt in a new location in the town centre, on Bulwary Dietla, opposite the Old Spa House (Stary Dom Zdrojowy). The institution, opened in 1995, is devoted to the painter who lived almost his whole life in Krynica.

The exhibition presents Nikifor's paintings from all periods of his work: watercolours, gouaches and drawings on characteristic subjects, such as landscapes with Orthodox churches and churches, the architecture of Krynica, interiors, railway stations, offices, “dollar factories” and portraits. The documentary part consists of memorabilia of the artist, publications about him and his photographs.

The interior of the villa, after a general renovation, is adapted to the needs of people with disabilities, and the exhibition is on one floor, in several smaller rooms, including the parts devoted to the artist's international fame and to “Nikifor's Treasury” (Skarbiec Nikifora). The museum also presents temporary exhibitions of well-known creators from the circle of non-professional and folk art.
