About the museum
The Vojenská expozícia Michala Strenka was established in 2017 in the area directly below the castle in Stará Ľubovňa. The location has symbolic significance: during the Second World War a German penal unit was stationed at Ľubovňa Castle. The exhibition is run by the non-profit organisation Michala Strenka.
The exhibition is devoted mainly to the Second World War and is complemented by equipment of the Czechoslovak army from the Cold War era and equipment of the armed forces of the Slovak Republic. Visitors can walk through a military trench over 100 m long, see underground bunkers and artillery batteries, ground and aerial equipment, and a weapons pavilion displaying firearms from the Second World War period and post-war production. The pavilions of individual countries pay tribute to all the sides affected by the conflict. The whole is supplemented by audiovisual elements.
The centrepiece is an oversized sculpture of Michal Strenk (Michael Strank), a native of Jarabina, who fell at the age of 22 and became famous for raising the American flag on Iwo Jima.
