About the museum
The first museum in Ojców opened in 1908 on the initiative of the Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society (Polskie Towarzystwo Krajoznawcze), mainly thanks to the efforts of Stefan Jan Czarnowski. It was housed in the gatehouse building of the castle in Ojców and operated intermittently until 1988. During the First World War the collections were looted.
In 1951 the PTTK took over the care of the institution. In 1988 the collections were moved to the former guesthouse “Bazar Warszawski”, rebuilt after a fire in the 1970s, where the museum still operates on the first floor.
The exhibition includes ethnographic collections from Ojców and its surroundings and a room commemorating the January Uprising. Memorabilia connected with local history are also presented, including archaeological artefacts, materials on guiding and tourism, and elements of former wooden architecture and folk costumes. A valuable relic is the 19th-century visitors’ book from 1881, in which people visiting the Prądnik Valley signed their names.
