About the museum

The Muzeum Regionalne w Iwanowicach (Iwanowice Regional Museum) is housed in the historic building of a former inn, which probably dates from the early 18th century, from the time when a stagecoach post operated in the area. The building stands in the centre of the village, on the route from Słomniki to Skała.

The institution was established in 1977 on the initiative of activists of the Polish Tourist and Sightseeing Society (PTTK), mainly Jan Jasiówka and Antoni Walaszczyk. For its first ten years it was the Izba Regionalna i Pamięci Narodowej (Regional and National Memory Room), housed in temporary premises intended for demolition. In 1988 it gained the status of a museum, and the collections were moved to the spacious rooms of the former inn; the official opening in the new interiors took place in 1992.

The collections number about 400 museum objects, some from archaeological excavations in Iwanowice and some donated by residents or purchased. The permanent exhibition occupies five rooms of 130 m² and includes archaeological, geological, ethnographic, historical and national memory sections. A reconstructed 19th-century peasant room is of particular interest, and the national memory section shows copies of portraits and memorabilia of people connected with Iwanowice, such as Józef Poniatowski, Tadeusz Kościuszko, Józef Piłsudski and Marian Langiewicz.
