About the museum
The Museum of the Estreicher Family, of the Losses of Culture and of Restitution operates in the villa of Prof. Karol Estreicher Jr. at ul. Sarnie Uroczysko 15 in Kraków. The villa, entered in the register of monuments under number A-568, was designed by the architect Józef Gałęzowski. Karol Estreicher Jr. moved it from Ojców and rebuilt it at Sarnie Uroczysko in 1946–1948. He lived there with his wife Teresa Lasocka-Estreicher from 1948 until his death in April 1984.
He gave the villa to the Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Sztuk Pięknych w Krakowie (Kraków Society of Friends of Fine Arts) in a will drawn up in 1980. In 1984–1994 it stood uninhabited, was robbed and deteriorated, and renovation work in 1994–1995 further damaged it. Thanks to its own funds and the help of sponsors, the Society carried out a general renovation of the building in 2005–2009.
The museum exhibition, devoted to the Estreicher family and to the losses of Polish culture and restitution, was prepared by the Society’s conservator Anna Joniak with the help of Hanna and Tomasz Merstallinger and Wojciech Sępiak. The museum is one of three museums run by the Society, alongside the Palace of Art (Pałac Sztuki) and the Jan Matejko Manor in Krzesławice.
