About the museum

The beginnings of museum activity in Trzebnica go back to 1979, when, on the initiative of the Towarzystwo Miłośników Ziemi Trzebnickiej (Society of Friends of the Trzebnica Land), a National Memory Room (Izba Pamięci Narodowej) was set up in the town hall. In 1990 the room was converted into a Regional Museum. From 1998 to 2008 the museum was housed in the 18th-century townhouse “Pod Złotym Słońcem” (At the Golden Sun) on the market square, and since 2008 it has again been based in the town hall.

The exhibitions show photographs and documents from 1945–1947, photographs of Trzebnica from the early 20th century by R. Eysmontt, 18th- and 19th-century prints of Trzebnica, and copies of medieval documents and seals, among them those of Duchess Jadwiga, the Silesian dukes and the Trzebnica monastery. Visitors can also see town plans, a panorama from Winna (Kocia) Góra, a board about the founders of the basilica and the monastery, and old postcards.

A separate thread is the excavations of Prof. Jan Burdukiewicz on Winna Góra. Traces of a gatherer-hunter group of Homo erectus from about 500,000 years ago are among the oldest evidence of human presence on Polish lands. The collection is complemented by objects on loan from the Muzeum Archeologiczne we Wrocławiu (Archaeological Museum in Wrocław), including 13th-century pilgrim flasks.
