About the museum
The museum in Iłża has been built up since 1971 by local regional enthusiasts, above all A. Bednarczyk. Initially the institution bore the name Muzeum Ziemi Iłżeckiej (Iłża Land Museum). Since 1 January 1976 it has been a state museum and operates under its present name.
The seat is a single-storey building of the former church and hospital-almshouse for the poor, dedicated to św. Ducha (the Holy Spirit). The foundation of 1448 is attributed to Zbigniew Oleśnicki, Bishop of Kraków, while the new building was erected in 1754 with funds from Bishop Andrzej Załuski. Part of the medieval structure, the chimney section, and a foundation tablet with the Junosza coat of arms by the entrance have survived.
The largest group of collections consists of ceramics from Iłża and the surrounding area, numbering about a thousand objects. The collection is complemented by gifts from the Kraków collector Ryszard Górniak, who donated prints, copperplate engravings, maps, paintings, early printed books and coins. The museum has also carried out archaeological research, including at the site Iłża – Chwałowski Trakt, and alongside its permanent displays it organised more than a hundred temporary exhibitions in the years 1989–2016. It also runs museum lessons and guided tours of the town and of the ruins of the castle of the Bishops of Kraków.
