About the museum

The first museum in Starachowice was established in 1938 on the initiative of the Polish Society for Regional Studies (Polskie Towarzystwo Krajoznawcze). Its collections concerned mainly the history of industry and mining; it did not survive the Second World War. The idea of a museum was revived in 1967 on the initiative of the local PTTK. In 1972 the Municipal People’s Council handed over a historic manor house, the former supervisory building of a blast furnace dating from 1835–1838, for this purpose, and the museum opened in 1973 during the Starachowice Days. The building was entered in the register of monuments in 1997.

The collections come mainly from purchases from the heirs of local collector Teodor Krzyżanowski, from the remnants of pre-war museum rooms in Wąchock and Starachowice, and from donations, and number around 3,200 objects. The museum is run by the PTTK branch in Starachowice and, according to the latest information, is based at ul. inż. Władysława Rogowskiego 22.

The permanent exhibition is regional in character. The first room presents collections on prehistoric settlement in the Kamienna river basin, the early modern history of industry in the Zagłębie Staropolskie (Old Polish Industrial Region), and the modern history of Odlewnie Polskie (Polish Foundries). The display cases contain, among other things, coins, including Roman denarii and Greek coins, and fossilised mammoth bones found in the area. The second room is devoted to the development of industry and the town in the 19th and 20th centuries.
