About the museum

The Muzeum Regionalne w Lipsku was founded in 1973 and is housed in the building of the former town hall. It is a municipal institution operating within the Miejsko-Gminny Ośrodek Kultury (Town and Commune Cultural Centre). Since 2005 it has been looked after by the Stowarzyszenie Miłośników Lipskiej Pisanki i Tradycji (Association of Friends of the Lipsk Pisanka and Tradition), which, together with the Pracownia Architektury Żywej (Living Architecture Studio) from Dąbrowa Białostocka and the Lipsk branch of the Stowarzyszenie Twórców Ludowych (Folk Artists’ Association), develops the Muzeum Lipskiej Pisanki i Tradycji (Lipsk Pisanka and Tradition Museum) here.

The Muzeum Lipskiej Pisanki i Tradycji opened in May 2007 in cooperation with the Ethnography Department of the Podlasie Museum in Białystok. Its aim is to preserve the tradition of making pisanki with the pin-batik method, practised in Lipsk since the 19th century and decorated with a characteristic local ornament.

Besides the pisanki exhibition, the museum holds historical collections showing seven centuries of the history of the town and its surroundings, from the Yotvingian settlement onwards, and an ethnographic exhibition with the interior of a former village room, agricultural tools and household utensils. Lipsk folk artists give demonstrations and workshops in pisanki making, the baking of ceremonial bread, Easter palms and spiders, and paper cut-outs (wycinanki).
