About the museum

The Muzeum Ziemi Sejneńskiej (Sejny Land Museum) is housed in a classicist townhouse from the mid-19th century, the former residence of the bishops of Sejny, which residents called the Bishop's Palace (Pałac Biskupi). Within its walls, among other events, Marshal Józef Piłsudski met with residents of the region in 1919.

The museum was founded by the Sejny Society for the Protection of Monuments (Sejneńskie Towarzystwo Opieki nad Zabytkami), which has its seat in the palace. After a renovation lasting several months in 2004, the museum was officially opened on 2 May 2005 as the first museum devoted to the Sejny region. The exhibits come mainly from donations by residents and are often family heirlooms.

The permanent exhibitions are arranged in six thematic rooms: Jatvingian archaeology and numismatics, the Dominicans and the bishops of Sejny, the schools of Sejny, a military room, and a room devoted to the multiculturalism of the region. The Society also runs a diocesan museum in the former Dominican monastery and an ethnographic branch at Plac św. Agaty.
