About the museum
The collecting of materials on Oskar Kolberg (1814–1890), ethnographer, folklorist and composer, began in Przysucha in the 1970s, in the circle of the Przysuskie Towarzystwo Kulturalne (Przysucha Cultural Society). The collections were shown in the library and in the manor’s granary. In 1979 the collection was moved to Szydłowiec, leaving a museum branch in Przysucha. The biographical museum opened in 1990, on the centenary of the scholar’s death, and since 1992 it has been a branch of the Muzeum Wsi Radomskiej in Radom.
The seat is the Dembiński manor house, whose ground floor was given over to the museum. Old architectural details have survived, including wooden cornices, two tiled stoves and a cast-iron fireplace. The core of the display is the biographical exhibition “Oskar Kolberg (1814–1890). Etnograf, folklorysta, kompozytor” (Ethnographer, Folklorist, Composer), supplemented by stylishly furnished interiors: a Biedermeier salon and the scholar’s study, with an Elbląg cabinet from 1802, a library with first editions of “Lud” and memorabilia from Kolberg’s stay in Modlnica.
A separate part of the permanent exhibition is devoted to the history of Przysucha in the 18th to 20th centuries and to the history of the manor house and its owners, the Dembiński family. It shows copies of documents, maps, plans and pictorial material from archives and from the Dembiński family. The museum co-organises the Oskar Kolberg Award “For Services to Folk Culture”.
