About the museum
The Zabytkowy Zakład Hutniczy w Maleńcu (Historic Ironworks in Maleniec) is a local government cultural institution established in 2005 by the Końskie County (Powiat Konecki). It deals with the protection and promotion of the industrial heritage of the region and uses it in education, culture and tourism. The institution is based in the complex of the former metallurgical works, which worked without interruption from 1784 to 1967 and is one of the oldest centres of the Staropolski Okręg Przemysłowy (Old Polish Industrial Region).
When it started up, the factory was the largest metallurgical works in the Polish lands. Its special feature was an extensive water-power system, in which eighteen water wheels worked, immersed in the current of the Czarna Konecka river. In the mid-nineteenth century, thanks to large investments by the owners, the works became the most modern ironworks in the Kingdom of Poland. During the January Uprising, clandestine production of weapons and arms for the insurgent units was carried out here.
In 1967 the works were recognised as a technical monument and entered in the register of monuments. In 1968 students and staff of the Metallurgy Faculty of the Silesian University of Technology discovered the decaying factory and in the following years took up its reconstruction and conservation. The county bought the facility in 2004. Today visitors can see the preserved water wheels, the drive shaft, the sheet rolling mill of 1843, the nail-making hall and historic machines; the additional programme also includes demonstrations of old technologies and workshops.
