About the museum

The Muzeum Regionalne w Świniarach Starych (Regional Museum in Świniary Stare) opened on 30 July 2013 on the initiative of the Stowarzyszenie Aktywnej Społeczności (Association of an Active Community), which operates in the Łoniów municipality. The ceremony was attended by the wójt (mayor) of Łoniów municipality and the head of the branch of the Muzeum Historii Polskiego Ruchu Ludowego (Museum of the History of the Polish Peasant Movement) in Sandomierz. Not only members of the association but also residents of Świniary and the surrounding villages, who donated exhibits, helped to create the institution.

The museum is housed in a former health centre building. The collections, which come from private donors, are arranged in three rooms. The first recreates a former village room with furniture and everyday objects; the second shows folklore and old farm tools; and the third is furnished in the atmosphere of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, with household items, press, posters and coins.

The institution aims to remind younger generations what ordinary life looked like in past decades. One of the rooms and the staircase function as an art gallery called the Galeria Sztuki Wzgardzonej i Zapomnianej (Gallery of Neglected and Forgotten Art), where temporary exhibitions are shown.

The village of Świniary Stare lies in the Łoniów municipality, near the roundabout in Łoniów on national road no. 9, in the direction of the ferry across the Vistula to Baranów Sandomierski.
