About the museum

The castle in Baranów Sandomierski was built in 1591–1606 for the Leszczyński family to a design by Santi Gucci, on the site of an earlier manor house. It later belonged, among others, to the Wiśniowiecki, Lubomirski, Sanguszko, Potocki and Krasicki families. Fires in 1849 and 1898 destroyed part of the building; the restoration after the fire of 1898 was led by Tadeusz Stryjeński.

During both world wars the castle was occupied by troops, and after 1945 it served as an agricultural warehouse. Restoration work was carried out in 1959–1968, after which the building was taken over by the Siarkopol company. In 1970 the company set up a museum there on the sulphur basin. After a change of owner in 1997, the museum was moved to the representative rooms on the upper floors of the east and west wings and to the restored chapel.

The owner of the castle and park complex is Agencja Rozwoju Przemysłu S.A. (Industrial Development Agency). Visitors see the interiors of the castle with a guide, including the permanent exhibition and the rooms, the Art Nouveau chapel, and the underground tourist route with temporary and permanent exhibitions. The offer also includes an exhibition of porcelain, an exhibition of photography, Renaissance costumes, a virtual walk with VR goggles and museum workshops.
