About the museum
The Muzeum Polskiego Przemysłu Siarkowego (Museum of the Polish Sulphur Industry) was established in September 2013 as a branch of the Muzeum Historyczne Miasta Tarnobrzega (Historical Museum of the City of Tarnobrzeg). It is housed in a former manor granary from 1843 at ul. prof. Stanisława Pawłowskiego 14. The classicist brick building of two storeys was designed by Jan Bogdan Tarnowski, owner of the Dzików estates. It is the last surviving building of the former Wymysłów manor farm, and the original timber beam ceilings have survived inside.
The institution collects samples of native sulphur, technical documentation, machine parts, mining uniforms, archival photographs and other objects connected with the extraction and processing of sulphur in Poland, especially in the Tarnobrzeg Sulphur Basin (Tarnobrzeskie Zagłębie Siarkowe).
The permanent exhibition tells of the former sulphur mining at Swoszowice near Kraków, of the mines and processing plants of the Tarnobrzeg Sulphur Basin in the second half of the 20th century, and of mining traditions, beliefs and the cult of St Barbara. In the conference room on the ground floor a panorama of the Machów open-pit sulphur mine is displayed, and around the building stand parts of large mining machines that form a mining open-air museum.
