About the museum
The Muzeum Miejskie w Grodzisku Wielkopolskim was established in 1937 on the initiative of the mayor, Dr Roman Mazurkiewicz; initially it occupied two rooms in the town hall. The German occupation ended its activity, and its collections were plundered.
The idea of a museum was revived in 1968 thanks to Edward Pawłowski, a local activist, photographer and enthusiast of history, and the institution received two rooms in the then Municipal House of Culture. In 1991 Dariusz Matuszewski took over the care of the collections, and the museum was moved to the building of a former palace at ul. 27 Stycznia; it was officially opened in 1992.
The institution now operates as the Muzealna Izba Tradycji Ziemi Grodziskiej (Museum Room of Tradition of the Grodzisk Land) within the RONDO Cultural Centre. It presents memorabilia connected with the history of the town and its surroundings, including Grodzisk beer (piwo grodziskie), and an outdoor military exhibition has been set up beside the palace. The museum publishes works on local history and co-organises the Grodziska Noc Muzeów (Grodzisk Museum Night).
