About the museum
The Museum of Fisheries is housed in the former Evangelical church of Sts Peter and Paul, whose origins go back to the 15th century. The building stands in the centre of Hel, near the harbour, and adjoins a Franciscan monastery. After the Second World War the state took over the building, and in 1972 it was transferred to the then Central Maritime Museum.
The museum opened on 6 May 1972 as the first branch of that institution. Its first director was Roman Klim. Today the museum belongs to the National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk.
In the historic interior, which preserves the layout of the former sacred space, historic boats and fishing tools, a boatbuilder’s workshop and topics related to the ecology of the Baltic are displayed. The collections also include archival photographs and maritime paintings. Traditional fishing boats are gathered around the building, and the tower offers views of the port of Hel and the Gulf of Gdańsk.
