About the museum

The Ośrodek Oporu Jastarnia (Jastarnia Resistance Centre) was built in 1939 across the middle of the Hel Peninsula to defend the land approach to the port and the village of Hel against a German attack. It consists of four heavy combat bunkers – “Sokół” (Falcon), “Sabała”, “Saragossa” and “Sęp” (Vulture) – as well as light bunkers, anti-infantry barbed wire and anti-tank obstacles. In September 1939 the fighting took place away from the line of bunkers, and the peninsula was held by detonating an explosive charge. Towards the end of the war the Germans partly made use of the bunkers.

After the war the facilities remained in defence plans, and only in the late 1970s were they abandoned. In 1999, by decision of the voivodeship monument conservator, the site was entered in the register of monuments, and in 2000 it was handed over to civil administration, which stopped the devastation. In 2004–2005 the bunkers were renovated, obstacles and trenches were rebuilt, and educational trails were laid out.

Since 2005 the Skansen Fortyfikacji II Rzeczypospolitej im. kontradmirała Włodzimierza Steyera (Open-Air Museum of Second Republic Fortifications, named after Rear Admiral Włodzimierz Steyer) has operated in the command bunker “Sabała”. The exhibition shows the equipment of soldiers and how Polish fortifications worked, and visitors receive a ticket in the form of a pass. The bunker “Sęp” lies on the beach, but its interior is filled with sand, and “Sokół” is not open to the public.
