About the museum
Chata Rybacka stands in the oldest part of Jastarnia on ul. Rynkowa. It was built in 1881 from timber salvaged from shipwrecks that the sea had washed ashore. The house had two rooms, a kitchen and a small storeroom, and a larger storeroom was added later. The last residents were Marianna and Józef Kohnke with their children. Józef, known as Tuba, is still remembered by the people of Jastarnia, which is why the hut is popularly called “Tubówë chëczë”.
The building was listed as a historic monument in 1983. In the same year, the Jastarnia branch of the Zrzeszenie Kaszubsko-Pomorskie (Kashubian-Pomeranian Association) set itself the goal of restoring the hut. Conservation work lasted until 1991, and the commune covered the costs of the renovation. Exhibits were then collected, and the museum officially opened on 2 May 1992. Until 2016, visitors were guided by Marian Selin, a Kashubian poet and storyteller.
The reconstructed farmstead shows the living and working quarters: a kitchen with a tiled stove, an antique dresser and dishes decorated with Kashubian patterns; a bedroom with beds, paintings of saints and a spinning wheel; a children’s room; and a cowshed with farming and fishing tools. The exhibition covers fishing equipment from the 15th to the 19th century.
