About the museum
The Muzeum Sopotu was established in 2001 by decision of the City Council and the mayor of Sopot. Its seat is a villa from 1904 by the beach, surrounded by a garden, designed in the eclectic style. The building belonged to the Claaszen family, the first owners and residents of the villa, and their legacy forms one of the museum's main collections.
The collections number more than ten thousand objects and illustrate the history and development of the town, the seaside resort and the region. They include, among other things, furniture and applied arts from the Claaszen house, Delft faience, costumes and beach accessories, underwear from the 19th and 20th centuries, spa glasses and souvenirs of the resort, and around two thousand postcards. Part of the collection is available in the Baltic Digital Library (Bałtycka Biblioteka Cyfrowa).
The museum runs temporary exhibitions, publishing and educational activities, organises historical walks around Sopot, and carries out projects involving residents, such as “Sopocianie” (The People of Sopot). It belongs to ICOM and to the Iconic Houses association. The building is currently being renovated as part of an EU-funded project to expand Sopot's cultural offer; completion is planned for the end of 2026, and in the meantime open-air exhibitions and events take place outside the seat.
