Muzeum Archidiecezjalne w Gdańsku

Museum of sacred art in the former Cistercian monastery in Oliwa, with the refectory, the Sala Pokoju Oliwskiego (Hall of the Peace of Oliwa) and an exhibition of panel painting.

Opening hours
Limited operations. The museum is open to visitors seasonally, in July, August and the first half of September.

About the museum

The museum is housed in the interiors of the former Cistercian monastery in Oliwa, which existed from 1186 to 1831 and has been used since 1957 by the Gdańskie Seminarium Duchowne (Gdańsk Theological Seminary). In the summer season the most valuable historic part of the monastery is open to visitors; it dates from the end of the 13th, the 14th and the 15th centuries and was once fully enclosed.

The museum was solemnly opened on 16 November 1975, on the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Diocese of Gdańsk. At the time it displayed collections of sacred art – paintings, sculptures and applied arts – in the former refectory and in the Sala Pokoju Oliwskiego.

After the restoration of the interiors in 1993–1999, the museum changed its profile and began to focus on restoring the original qualities of the monastery rooms. Today the collections of sacred art are presented in the lavatorium, and the exhibition of panel painting is in the cloisters. Visitors also see the refectory, the Sala Pokoju Oliwskiego and the Kaplica Mariacka (Mariacka Chapel).
