About the museum
The Rybackie Mini Muzeum (Fishing Mini Museum) was set up in 2000 out of the passion of Sopot fisherman Jerzy Piątek, who worked at sea for over forty years. The collection consisted of souvenirs gathered by three generations of his family and was meant to preserve material traces of the old fishermen. The museum was housed in a small premises at al. Wojska Polskiego, not far from the Sopot pier.
The collection included, among other things, old cutter engines, nets and fishing gear, a fragment of a 19th-century cutter, a grappling hook, and a homemade rope-making machine built from parts of a bicycle and a piano. The founder himself spoke about almost every object and showed visitors around free of charge. Admission was free, and the upkeep of the place depended on voluntary donations.
Jerzy Piątek died in August 2024, and the museum was left without a caretaker. In March 2025 the mayor of Sopot announced the signing of a letter of intent with the founder’s family: the Muzeum Sopotu (Sopot Museum) will take over care of the collection, to secure it, catalogue it and prepare it for future public access.
