About the museum
The Museum of the Istebna Spruce was established in 2001 at the Wyrchczadeczka forest nursery in Jaworzynka, together with the Regional Gene Bank of the Istebna Spruce, which is part of the Carpathian Gene Bank. The museum is looked after by the Wisła Forest District (Nadleśnictwo Wisła). The Carpathian Spruce Gene Bank has been operating since 1994 and protects the genetic resources of the spruce forests of the Beskids, storing seeds in cold rooms at -20°C.
The exhibition presents the history of the Beskid spruce stands and research on them, the developmental cycle of the Istebna spruce from seed to a majestic tree, and the properties of its wood, which is used, among other things, to make stringed and folk instruments. There are also exhibits connected with the history and culture of the Silesian Beskids. A demonstration stand of trees grows near the nursery.
Since 2002 a Demonstration Capercaillie Aviary has operated at the museum, where visitors can watch capercaillies and rare black grouse through Venetian mirrors without startling the birds. The forest district breeds capercaillies there in order to release them later into the Beskid forests. Lectures and meetings around a campfire also take place at the site.
