About the museum
The museum opened on 22 January 1972 as the Museum of the Polish Military Health Service at the Military Medical Academy in Łódź. Its collections came from an exhibition organised in 1968 on the tenth anniversary of the academy, and from donations by veterans and collectors. After the Military Medical Academy merged with the civilian Medical Academy in 2002, the institution adopted the name Museum of the Medical University. It operates within the Department of the History of Sciences and Military Medicine.
The museum is on the second floor of a tenement building at ul. gen. Lucjana Żeligowskiego 7/9, where the 28th Kaniów Rifle Regiment (28 Pułk Strzelców Kaniowskich) was stationed between the wars. The exhibition is arranged chronologically and covers about 800 m². It shows the development of medicine from the earliest times, the traditions and achievements of military and civilian health services, and the history of Polish military medical education.
The collections include medical instruments and equipment, uniforms of military doctors, dioramas showing the treatment of the wounded on battlefields, and valuable early printed books, including a work by Paracelsus from 1618 and a Polish herbal by Szymon Syreniusz from 1613. A separate section is devoted to the First World War, and others to the Second Polish Republic and the Second World War. Visitors are guided by volunteers, students of the Faculty of Military Medicine.
