About the museum

The “Stare Bielany” pumping station was built in the 1890s as part of Toruń’s water supply system, designed by engineer Heinrich Metzger. The complex was built over several years, mainly on the site of a former farm, and handed over to the Wasserwerk der Stadt Thorn company, founded in 1893. It belongs to the route of historic technical and industrial heritage sites in Kuyavia-Pomerania.

The most characteristic feature is the neo-Gothic water tower with a reservoir of 400 m³, at a height of about 30 metres. The pump hall originally housed steam engines and later electric motors driving two piston pumps. The complex also includes a collecting well, a valve chamber building with water-gauge turrets, a residential and service building for the staff, an outbuilding and a workshop. The rest of the site was occupied by woodland and a pond.

Thanks to funding from the Regional Operational Programme of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship for 2014–2020, the historic buildings were revitalised and adapted for exhibitions. One building houses a permanent exhibition on water supply and sewerage technology and the history of the Toruń Waterworks (Toruńskie Wodociągi). Visits are conducted with a guide after prior registration and are free of charge.
