About the museum

The Muzeum Techniki i Komunikacji – Zajezdnia Sztuki w Szczecinie (Museum of Technology and Transport – Zajezdnia Sztuki, Art Depot, in Szczecin) was established on 1 January 2006. Its seat is the former tram depot at ul. Niemierzyńska 18a, entered in the register of monuments and designed by the Berlin architects Griesbach and Steinmetz. The hall was built in 1912–1913 and is among the most beautiful buildings of its type in the city, thanks to its sloping roof with a glazed gable decorated with a large clock.

The depot survived the Second World War without major damage. It was from here that the first tram in Polish Szczecin set off, and in the first months of urban transport the entire technical base for tram traction was located here.

The adaptation of the building into a museum was co-financed by the Norwegian Financial Mechanism and the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism with more than €2.3 million. The museum deals with the history of technology and civilisation, with particular attention to the technical achievements of the Polish western and northern lands since 1945, and presents permanent exhibitions from its own collections, among them the largest collection of products of the Szczecin firm Stoewer in the world.

Highlights

  • The largest collection of Stoewer products in the world: cars, sewing machines, typewriters and bicycles
  • Trams and buses from the history of Szczecin’s public transport, including Bremen-type trams
  • Junak motorcycles from the Szczecin Motorcycle Factory
  • Interactive Motoeksperymentarium “Smyk” (Motor Experiment Centre) with crash and driving simulators
