About the museum
The Pieniński Ośrodek Historii Turystyki Górskiej (Pieniny Centre for the History of Mountain Tourism) was established in 1986 in a building next to the PTTK “Orlica” hostel in Szczawnica. Its present name was given by a resolution of the Mountain Tourism Commission of the PTTK Main Board of 6 June 2016. The exhibition, also called the museum room, is open every day, and the entrance leads through the hostel reception.
The exhibition presents the history of tourism in the Pieniny, the history of the PTTK branches in Szczawnica and Krościenko, rafting and rafting trips through the Dunajec Gorge (Przełom Dunajca), the establishment of the Pieniny National Park and the history of Spisz. Its most valuable item is the “Book of Resolutions of the General Assemblies and the Board” (Księga uchwał walnych zgromadzeń i zarządu) of the Pieniny branch of the Tatra Society in Szczawnica, from the years 1893–1933.
Display cases show, among other things, the history of trail marking and of the hostels in the Pieniny, a letter from 1894, a membership card from 1899, a panorama of the Pieniny by Edward Moskała, lithographs by Zygmunt Stęczyński, memorabilia of the hermit Wincenty Kasprowicz, and old photographs, postcards and guidebooks. The only trace of the Sienkiewicz hostel in Przechodki Małe, a key, has also been preserved here.
