Muzeum – Zespół Zamkowy w Niedzicy

Medieval Dunajec Castle above Lake Czorsztyn, with a museum exhibition, dungeons, a carriage house and a granary; visited with a guide.

Opening hoursAdmission 40 zł

About the museum

Construction of Dunajec Castle began between 1308 and 1313 under the Hungarian king Charles I Robert of the Angevin dynasty. The stronghold was to secure the northern border of the Kingdom of Hungary and the trade route through the Dunajec valley linking Kraków with Buda. In the following centuries various families extended and altered the castle. After the First World War it found itself within the borders of Poland, and its last owners, the Hungarian Salamon family, lived in it until 1943.

After the estate was nationalised, the castle has been under the care of the Association of Art Historians since 1950, and a museum has operated here since 1963. The interiors of the upper and middle castle were adapted for museum purposes, keeping their historical layout.

The visit covers the courtyard of the lower castle, the prison dungeons, historic halls, the courtyard of the upper castle, the lords' chambers and the rooms of the last owners, and the viewing terraces. The carriage house shows historic horse-drawn vehicles from 1900–1939, and in the summer season the wooden granary from the late 18th century can be visited, with an ethnographic exhibition on the culture of Spisz. The castle has often been a film location and is one of the best-known monuments of the region.
