About the museum

The Muzeum Pamięci Narodowej i Sztuki Ludowej w Ochotnicy Górnej (Museum of National Memory and Folk Art in Ochotnica Górna) was established by resolution of the council of the gmina of Ochotnica Dolna in 2012 as a municipal cultural institution. The exhibitions are housed on the top floor of the multifunctional building of the Wiejski Ośrodek Kultury in the centre of the village, near the parish church.

The permanent exhibition “Lotnicze ślady w Gorcach” (Aviation Traces in the Gorce Mountains) tells the story of the crash of the American B-24J Liberator bomber named “California Rocket”, which came down in Ochotnica on 18 December 1944, and of other aircraft that fell in the Gorce between 1939 and 1945. It shows preserved fragments of the aircraft, aircraft models and information boards.

The ethnographic exhibition presents the interior of a traditional Ochotnica room (izba) from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, with old everyday objects. There is also an exhibition of photographs taken in Ochotnica in the 1970s by the Kraków photographer Adam Baczyński.
