About the museum
The Museum of Militaria is one of seven branches of the Wrocław City Museum, which was established in 2000. Its seat is the Municipal Arsenal, a Gothic building erected around 1459, also called the St Nicholas Arsenal (Arsenał Mikołajski). It is one of the few medieval buildings in Wrocław preserved in its entirety; it has an irregular quadrangular plan around an inner courtyard, and the well with a crane in the courtyard was built in 1620.
The museum occupies two wings of the arsenal and shows its collections on three floors. The building’s military function, as a former weapons store, is thus continued in the exhibition. The Archaeological Museum and the Building Archive are also housed in the building.
The permanent exhibitions cover historical weapons from the Stone Age to the 18th century, firearms from the beginning of the 18th century to modern designs, and Polish edged weapons. A separate part is the Jacek Kijak Hall, with a collection of helmets donated to the museum in 1999, considered one of the largest in Europe, and the newest exhibition of uniforms and headgear of the Polish soldier from 1939–1945.
