About the museum

Jan Ostrowski, a local farmer and to this day the museum’s curator, founded the Local Museum in Łąkorz in 1995. The collection began with farm machinery, but was soon enriched with everyday objects, tools and souvenirs of life in the old villages of the Lubawa Land. The museum is run by the Association for the Protection of Nature and Cultural Heritage, and the Gmina Biskupiec is its patron.

The heart of the museum is an approximately two-hundred-year-old village cottage, which houses a living room from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries with a kitchen and a traditional stove known as a westfalka, while the attic has been recreated as a former village post office. Next to it stands a forge, handed over by the gmina in 1996, with a blacksmith’s workshop, and an open-air collection of machinery and equipment for growing and processing grain.

Around the museum a “mill village” is developing under the motto “Od ziarenka do bochenka” (From Grain to Loaf): a restored nineteenth-century Dutch-type windmill, a bread room, a forest room, an apiary and a forest education point. The association also organises events, including the Lubawa dialect festival, a bread festival, fairs and competitions.
