About the museum

The museum in Mielnik, operating as the Ośrodek Dziejów Ziemi Mielnickiej (Mielnik Land History Centre), was established in 2011 and is a unit of the Municipal Centre of Culture, Sport and Recreation in Mielnik. It is housed in the building of the former “Górnik” cinema.

The first permanent exhibition was built around a gift from the painter Henryk Musiałowicz (1914–2015), who spent summers in Mielnik in the 1950s and painted the series “Krajobraz nadbużański” (Bug Region Landscape) and “Krajobraz animalistyczny” (Animal Landscape) here. In 2011 the artist donated 69 of his works to the museum.

The collection also includes a medieval dugout canoe, carved from a single oak trunk and recovered from the Bug in 2013; radiocarbon dating points to 1152–1260. Other exhibitions present Fr Henryk Kazimierowicz, a friend of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, artists associated with Mielnik and paintings by Ignacy Pieńkowski.
