About the museum

The Muzeum Diecezjalne im. Jana Pawła II in Drohiczyn was established on 12 January 2004 by Bishop Antoni Dydycz. The idea had already arisen in 1966, when an exhibition of sacred art from Podlasie, Polesie and the Nowogródek region was shown during the millennium celebrations in Drohiczyn. From 1970 the most valuable relics were kept in the Diocesan Archive, and after the Drohiczyn diocese was created in 1991 the collections grew quickly.

The museum occupies almost the entire lower floor of the historic building of a former Franciscan monastery at ul. Kraszewskiego 4. The diocese bought the complex back from the state in 1996 and, after a thorough renovation, prepared an exhibition there; the first group of visitors was guided through on 1 August 2004.

The exhibition covers twelve rooms with a total area of over 500 m², three of which were still being prepared. The collection includes more than a hundred historic liturgical vestments and textiles and around three hundred pewter vessels. Unique items include a camp monstrance, a priest's stole from a Soviet labour camp, the baptismal record of King Stanisław August Poniatowski and a crucifix made by Persian Muslims. All the museum staff are also guides.
