About the museum

The Regional Museum in Siemiatycze was founded in 1976 on the initiative of the Friends of Siemiatycze Society (Towarzystwo Przyjaciół Siemiatycz). In 1993 it was moved from a former orangery at ul. Legionów Piłsudskiego to the classicist building of the former synagogue at ul. Zaszkolna.

The synagogue was built in 1797 at the foundation of Princess Anna Jabłonowska, as compensation to the Jewish community, which had lost its cemetery during the reconstruction of the town. A fire in 1824 destroyed the building, and in 1944 its fittings were damaged.

Since 2001 the institution has operated as a gallery of the Siemiatycze Cultural Centre (Siemiatycki Ośrodek Kultury). In four rooms, three permanent displays present the works of Józef Charyton, Leonidas Wiszenko and Ryszard Brzeski, and the fourth room serves temporary exhibitions of painting, graphics, sculpture, photography and folk art.
