About the museum
The Museum in Zelów – Documentation Centre for the History of the Bohemian Brethren was established on 20 June 2003 at the Evangelical-Reformed parish. It is housed in a specially renovated attic of the church, as well as in its sacristy, which was adapted as an archive, an archival workroom and a library. The first director and founder, until 2010, was Fr Mirosław Jelinek; the curators are Dr Jacek Kriegseisen and MA Dariusz Czwojdrak.
The museum collects, conserves and presents traces of the spiritual and material culture of the Bohemian Brethren. Zelów is the place where they settled: the first Czech families arrived here in 1803, developed light industry and drove the town’s economic development. Their weavers’ houses can be recognised by an attic projecting about a metre beyond the walls. The town has the largest Czech minority in Poland.
The permanent exhibition in the attic presents the history of the Bohemian Brethren, from their beginnings in Bohemia through their settlement in Zelów and the surrounding area to the present day. The display cases also contain everyday objects, furniture and weaving equipment, such as spinning wheels, spindles and hand looms. Schoolchildren take part in museum lessons on the ideals of Czech and Polish Reformation.
