About the museum
The origins of the Muzeum Miasta Pabianic (Pabianice City Museum) go back to 1907, when a museum section was set up at the Polska Macierz Szkolna (Polish School Society), founded by the doctor, entomologist and ethnographer Dr Witold Eichler. In 1945 the town handed the institution the Renaissance manor house at Stary Rynek 1, called the Zamek (Castle), built in 1566–1571 on the initiative of the canon Stanisław Dąbrowski. The museum opened there in May 1948, and in 1972 it also took over the building of a former elementary school from 1886. Since 1990 it has been a municipal cultural institution of the Gmina Miejska Pabianice (Pabianice Town Commune).
The collections cover archaeology (including finds from Siemiechów), historical memorabilia such as postcards, guild seals and banners, ethnography, art and natural history collections. A special part of the collection consists of Eichler's gifts, including art from Central-Eastern Africa.
In the permanent exhibitions visitors learn about the old blacksmith's craft, the material culture of villages around Pabianice, and the interior of the alkierz (a side chamber) with polychromes by Jan Szulc from 1917, showing views of the town and scenes from its history. The museum also runs educational activities and organises temporary exhibitions.
