About the museum

The Muzeum Historii Łasku (Łask History Museum) was established on the initiative of local librarians and residents on 14 June 1997 as a museum room in the Public Library named after Jan Łaski the Younger (Biblioteka Publiczna im. Jana Łaskiego Młodszego). For eighteen years it was housed in the library’s cellars, and when space ran out it was moved to a restored 19th-century townhouse in the town centre. The reopening in the new seat, at 7 Plac 11 Listopada (11 November Square), took place on 6 June 2015. The museum is a municipal unit operating within the structure of the library.

At present the museum has five exhibition rooms on the ground floor and the first floor. The permanent exhibition “Z dziejów miasta i regionu” (“From the History of the Town and Region”) covers the history of Łask from prehistory, with excavations led by Prof. Leszek Kajzer, to the post-war years, and a large part of it concerns the Łaski family, especially Jan Łaski the Younger. It shows documents, chronicles, coins, banners, guild memorabilia and postcards, largely donated by residents. The second exhibition, “Miasto Las Kolumna – niezwykłe historie” (“The Town of Las Kolumna – Extraordinary Stories”), tells the story of the former district of Kolumna.

The museum also has an ethnographic exhibition with tools, household equipment and folk costumes, and an exhibition devoted to the 10th Fighter Aviation Regiment (10 Pułk Lotnictwa Myśliwskiego). Temporary exhibitions and classes for children are held on the ground floor, and in the courtyard under a shelter old agricultural tools are displayed. The museum runs museum lessons, workshops and themed historical walks around the town, and takes part in the Noc Muzeów (Museums Night).
