About the museum

The museum was founded in May 1985 as a branch of the Muzeum Narodowe Rolnictwa i Przemysłu Rolno-Spożywczego in Szreniawa, and it is the only institution of its kind in Poland. Its location is linked to the specifics of the region, where willow and hops have long been grown and wicker products made. The waterlogged terrain, where willow has always grown, and the Dutch settlement (osadnictwo olęderskie) of the first half of the eighteenth century had a major influence on these traditions.

The museum occupies two buildings representing old Dutch-settler architecture: the main building, a former dwelling house of a settler from the end of the eighteenth century, and a barn with a raised attic, known as a trempel, used for drying hops or storing willow. Around the buildings are artistic spatial forms in wicker, a shelter with machines and tools for harvesting and processing, and botanical displays: a salicarium with willow varieties and a hop garden.

The exhibitions show tools, machines and the wealth of basketry products, both utilitarian and artistic. The museum runs lessons, basketry workshops and demonstrations of weaving and processing willow, and organises the Ogólnopolskie Plenery Wikliniarskie (National Willow Plein-Air Events), the Spotkania Młodych Plecionkarzy (Meetings of Young Basket Weavers) and the Ogólnopolski Konkurs Plecionkarski (National Basketry Competition) as part of the Jarmark Chmielo-Wikliniarski (Hop and Willow Fair).
