About the museum

The Muzeum Gospodarki Mięsnej w Sielinku (Meat Industry Museum in Sielinko) is a branch of the National Museum of Agriculture and Agri-Food Industry in Szreniawa. It is located on the grounds of the Agricultural Advisory Centre (Ośrodek Doradztwa Rolniczego) in Sielinko, near Opalenica, in a specially built building which in 1996 was recognised as one of the three best newly built facilities in Poland. According to the parent museum in Szreniawa, the branch was established in May 2005.

Preparations for the opening date back to 1974, when Prof. Wincenty Pezacki began collecting exhibits. The donors were state meat and refrigeration enterprises, people working in the trade, craftsmen and their descendants, universities, schools and butchers' and sausage-makers' organisations. Among the exhibits are deposits from four museums and from the Jagiellonian University.

The exhibition shows the history of the butchery craft and the meat industry from the mid-17th century to the 1960s, and documents the processing of meat from slaughter to the making of sausages and sale. The collections number more than seven thousand objects, including butchery machines and tools, tables for processing animals, shop scales and wooden refrigerators. It is the only museum of its kind in Poland and the third in the world, after Germany and Hungary.
